H&R Block tax software does not support Electric Vehicle Credits

I have been a loyal H&R Block TaxCut software customer for over 10 years. However I ran into a  snag using their software today. They don’t support IRS Form 8936 – “Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit”

I purchased the software online and contacted their tech support when I couldn’t get the software to claim my tax credit. After about 20 minutes the tech support agent told me the following.

Danielle K.: I do apologize for the inconvenience, Jean-Pierre, but at this time none of our software supports Form 8936.

The support agent later revealed that there are no plans to support this form for the 2011 tax year. The support agent was happy to process my request for a refund and I should see a credit on my credit card.

The only vehicle credits the software supports is the Alternative Motor Vehicle credit which does not fill out the correct IRS tax form 8936 for submission with your tax filing. The only Nissan vehicle available is the now discontinued Altima Hybrid.

I checked Intuits’ TurboTax website. They claim to support form 8936, so I will buy TurboTax at Office Depot later today.

I am facing the same issue. I think you mean Form 8834 for the plug in vehicle credit. I am quite annoyed with H&R Block right now…how hard can it be to program a simple form.

Form 8834 is for ‘low speed’ EV’s (three wheelers I suppose; like golf carts). 8936 is for vehicles like the LEAF and Volt. In my case I am claiming for the LEAF. BTW TurboTax does it just fine 🙂

I just got of the phone with HR support and they informed me I could go pick up a form at a local office…..the conversation went downhill from there…..no refund…which was incredibly stupid as I have been using Taxcut for over 10 years…….. not anymore………… ‘you just can’t fix stupid’

Hard to believe a company that claims to be the best and one of the oldest at taxes cannot update with the tax flow. H&R Block the old and slow, Turbotax the new and fast.

I spoke to the IRS this morning and was told that the Nissan Leaf 2012 has not yet been approved for the Federal Tax Credit. Only the 2011 is approved (so far). I am currently working on trying to resolve this.

Wow. Obama is talking about increasing the credit to $10,000. Maybe they could swing that for you given you have had to wait?

Well, unfortunately I am just finding this out today. Since I am all the way through the program I guess I am going to print my return, include form 8936 and mail it in. I used TurboTax a few years ago and didn’t like it as well but guess what I am using next year!

Well crap! 2012 Volt owner here. I bought the H&R Block software and was going to do my taxes this weekend. Does anyone know if 8911 for installing a charging station is still good and if TurboTax supports it?

  9. Cathy says:

Just talked with H&R block support and Form 8936 is not in the software for 2012 taxes. He said maybe next year. So I will be looking else ware for software.

I just ran into the same issue with H&R Block 2013. I was fed the same party line of “not available this year, being considered for future years”. Stay away from H&R Block if you need this form!.
